Poetry as Practice

Poetry for me is, above all else, about asking questions. A poem may suggest answers; but the question is most important. A good poem should be left open-ended. It allows the question to roll around in the reader’s heart, where the real work is done.

Floating Point

There is an awareness that some have tasted,
     if only momentarily,
          and many aspire to
That recognizes itself as a floating point
A matrix of all things interconnected – like a crossroad
between every conceivable past and every possible future.
This point is the seed, ripe with the wisdom of the ages,
     yet ever fresh and new,
always on the verge of that collapse of time into eternity.

But when it does, who is left to tell about it?

TAT Foundation News

It’s all about “ladder work” – helping and being helped

Richard Rose, the founder of the TAT Foundation, spent his life searching for the Truth, finding it, and helping others to find their Way. Although not well known to the public, he touched the lives of thousands of spiritual seekers through his books and lectures and through personal contacts with local study groups that continue to work with his teachings today. He felt strongly that helping others generates help for ourselves as well in our climb up the ladder to the golden find beyond the mind.

Call To Action For TAT Forum Reader

With the intention of increasing awareness of TAT’s meetings, books, and the Forum among younger serious seekers, and to increase awareness of ways to approach the search for self-definition, the TAT Foundation is now on Instagram.

You can help! A volunteer is producing shareable text-quote and video content of Richard Rose and TAT-adjacent teachers. We need your suggestions for short, provocative 1-3 sentence quotes or 1 minute or less video clips of people like Richard Rose, Art Ticknor, Bob Fergeson, Tess Hughes, Bob Cergol, Shawn Nevins, Bob Harwood, Anima Pundeer, Norio Kushi, Paul Rezendes, Paul Constant, Mike Gegenheimer & other favorites.

Please send favorite inspiring/irritating quotes—from books you have by those authors, from the TAT Forum, or any other place—to TAT quotes. If you have favorite parts of longer videos (ex: from a talk at a past TAT meeting), please email a link to the video and a timestamp.

Thank you!

Your Contributions to TAT News

TAT founder Richard Rose believed that working with others accelerates our retreat from untruth. He also felt that such efforts were most effective when applied with discernment, meaning working with others on the rungs of the ladder closest to our own. The TAT News section is for TAT members to communicate about work they’ve been doing with or for other members and friends. Please your “ladder work” news.

Inspiration & Irritation

Irritation moves us; inspiration provides a direction

Message in a Bottle – Today’s View

It’s been about four years since pulling together a chapter for Message in a Bottle, a TAT Press publication that looked at the stories of a few seekers, asking them to write about their journey and insights along the way. Ultimately, the goal as I understood it was to create a kind of snapshot in time, with words a former “me” may have been helped by reading.

With a little prompting from a friend, the future me, the current me, decided to look back at what I had to say four years ago and write a few words about the view today. Sometimes it’s easier to see something for what it was in hindsight, when you aren’t in the driver seat so to speak. It has been an interesting comparison, then to now, with a few worthwhile highlights.

After telling my seeker story, summarizing the life that lead me to the today of four years ago, I spoke about feeling on the edge of complete surrender and commitment, comparing it to a skateboarder preparing to “drop in” on the park’s highest vertical ramp. I was looking for whatever stood in the way of this goal, fears, beliefs, whatever the hindrance may be. The section ended with the following imagery:

Science-Based Meditation Tools

Google AI Overview:

You can build a daily, science-backed meditation practice by watching expert-led YouTube videos. Stanford neuroscientist Dr. Andrew Huberman and Dr. Richard Davidson provide heavily researched protocols, such as Science-Based Meditation Tools to Improve Your Brain & Health. [1, 2, 3]

These leading scientific resources on YouTube detail specific practices to improve focus, mood, and stress management:

  • For Focus and Productivity: Try the Science-Based Meditation for Focus & Productivity to learn “spacetime bridging,” a technique that balances internal and external awareness to optimize brain function.
  • For Brain Rewiring & Stress Reduction: Explore the Meditation Technique (According to Science) short, which details how consistent sessions enhance gray matter density and regulate emotions. [1]
  • The 5-Minute Challenge: Research from experts on channels like the Huberman Lab proves that just 5 minutes of daily meditation for 30 days significantly reduces symptoms of anxiety and depression while lowering inflammation. [1]

To expand your tracking and establish a structured routine, use the freely available tools and mindfulness curricula from Healthy Minds Program developed by Dr. Richard Davidson’s laboratory.

How We Survive
“I was the sole survivor of a plane crash.
This is what I learned in eight days alone in the jungle.”

Vietnam Airlines Flight 474 was a scheduled passenger flight from Ho Chi Minh City-Tan Son Nhat International Airport, Vietnam to Nha Trang Airport, Vietnam Airport. During landing, the plane crashed on approach to Nha Trang Airport on 14 November 1992 during Cyclone Forrest. The aircraft was a Yakovlev Yak-40 registered VN-A449, a three-engined jet airliner built in the Soviet Union in 1976.[1] One passenger survived, while the other 24 passengers and six crew were killed. ~ Wikipedia

Annette Herfkens was on holiday with her fiancé when their plane went down, killing everyone but her. Three decades later, she reflects on how the trauma changed her. ~ Guardian.com article by Paula Cocozza

Annette Herfkens and her fiancé, Willem van der Pas, had been together for 13 years when he booked them on to a flight from Ho Chi Minh City to the Vietnamese coast. After six months of working in different countries, it was meant to be a romantic break. Van der Pas was a banker, Herfkens a trader. The plane was tiny, just 25 passengers and six crew. Being claustrophobic, Herfkens initially refused to board. To placate her, Van der Pas – “Pasje” as he was to her – fibbed that it was only a 20-minute flight. But 40 minutes had gone by when the plane dropped sharply. Van der Pas looked at her. “This I don’t like,” he said nervously. The plane dropped again. He grabbed her hand – and everything went black.

When Herfkens came to, the sounds of the Vietnamese jungle were coming through a jagged hole in the fuselage. The plane had crashed into a mountain ridge. A stranger lay dead upon her. Pasje, a little way off, lay back in his seat, also dead, a smile upon his lips…..

“If you accept what’s not there, then you see what is there,” she says.

Reader Commentary

Encouraging interactive readership among TAT members and friends

A reader wrote that what would make the Forum more interesting would be:

Hearing from people who are searching—and have questions instead of those providing endless advice and “answers.” What challenges they are facing. What their doubts and questions are. How they perceive their path is going. What they are doing in their lives. Where they think they will end up, etc., etc.

Can you help make the Forum more interesting?

The Reader Commentary question for the August TAT Forum came from the “Psychoactive Experimentation” article in last month’s Forum”

What are your thoughts, feelings, opinions, etc., about experimenting with psychoactive substances for self-inquiry?

Responses follow:

From Sergio F:

I prefer to follow the path with less physical health risks, like all the mystics that recognized Truth without using psychedelics. [Sergio is the reader who provided the article for last month’s Forum. -Ed.]

From Vince Lepidi:

My belief about psychoactive substances is that, at best, they can only give a glimpse of a reality beyond our normal, everyday reality. However, this could be beneficial for those who do not know there is a possibility of a Reality beyond our ordinary consciousness. While a college student in the early 1970’s, I took mescaline and felt a sense of “oneness” with everything, but I sensed even then it that this oneness was just a glimpse. and not the real “reality”. I knew about St. John of the Cross and his mystical experiences, as well as the sages from the East who claimed to have experienced Nirvana or Enlightenment and figured my mescaline experience was an “ersatz” thing. My “trip” just motivated me to seek a true spiritual teacher, who confirmed what I already had concluded about my mescaline experience. And I’d say that with just one use of the psychoactive drug, if it opens you up to the possibility of this deeper, true “Reality” then one time is enough. Don’t risk doing more.

From Theresa M:

I feel that psychoactive substances may be a useful tool to gain some insight for self-inquiry, but that insight is not likely to result in a permanent shift. I myself have never used psychoactive substances, as it feels like a short-cut or cheating somehow. However, since I have no experience with this, my opinion probably has no value.

From Anima Pundeer:

Depends on what the underlying motive is – if it is curiosity to see what happens if you take any mind-altering drugs, then I think you may want to go ahead as an experiment and see what really happens under the spell of the drug.
But if you think drugs can be a short cut to the effort needed to do Inquiry to go inwards, it may not work. It might help you readjust your perspective on your world view but it will not be a solution. I saw Sadhus on the banks of Ganges smoking Ganja. I wondered if they were really there to look for the Braham or to enjoy the slumber.
Chemicals cannot cure us of our innermost longing to be Home.

From Jesse:

From my own experience, I believe psychoactive substances can, in some circumstances, be a catalyst for self-inquiry. That said, I think they should be approached with great care, in a safe and controlled environment, and only after honestly checking in with your own intuition. If there is any hesitation or uncertainty, I’d be inclined to trust that. I don’t think they’re something to pursue lightly or with the expectation of achieving a particular spiritual outcome.

My own recognition of the Self came through such an experience, although that wasn’t my intention at the time. I had no expectation that anything significant would happen, and in hindsight it simply felt like the timing was right. The experience happened while I was with a group of close friends who had no spiritual interest. Looking back, I wish I’d been in a more intentional setting, as I had no idea what was about to unfold. The experience was intense enough that it changed the way some of them saw me, and those friendships have never quite been the same. It reinforced for me the importance of carefully considering both the environment and the people you’re with before undertaking anything of this nature.

From Mo L-O:

Never having used any of these types of substances I can only use my imagination as to what effect they would have on my thought patterns for Self Enquiry.

Normally I detest hypothetical questions and situations but with this topic I could really let my imagination run wild if I used this type of drug.

Whilst under the influence of one or more of these types of drugs maybe I could get answers to all my thoughts and questions leading to how I may reach the end of the road so to speak but, how will I know if these thoughts are possible? And, how will I know if my experience at that time is really happening or is it due to the drugs?

From William Racine:

My experience and perspective on experimenting with psychoactive substances is this: I grew up in a culture in which drugs were advertised in magazines, on radio and television, as the palliatives and/or solutions to practically any physical or psychological problem a person may have. My mother was a user of multiple prescriptions at any given time, and my father was also a man of his time, a heavy smoker and maintenance alcoholic, who would be prescribed pharmaceuticals for the inevitable physical ailments he suffered.

Coming to the age of 18 years in 1973, I had never smoked marijuana or used any psychoactive substances, when I arrived as a freshman at university, where I was immediately immersed in the world of such substances, as my mind awakened to the quest for self-definition. I plunged into the world of LSD, psilocybin mushrooms, mescalin and shamanism. Here is my conclusion, after about a decade of use of psychoactive substances and several decades of shamanic practices:

From Andreas H:

I have little knowledge on the subject. When travelling in Asia in my twenties, there was a psychedelic episode after eating a ’space cookie’.
This was long before I was introduced to self-inquiry, and though the experience was different from any other so far – showing that everyday perception is not the only possibility – there was no profound, lasting insight as a result.

If I were to experiment with plant medicine or psychedelic substances, it would really only be beneficial – as far as I’m concerned – if it was indeed a very deliberate attempt at deepening inquiry.
I would imagine a skilled facilitator is preferable in my case, fearing I might go off my head dabbling with it on my own.

From Jane L:

My take on experimenting with psychoactive substances for self-inquiry is it’s helpful to quench the curiosity until it’s not.

It’s a quick tool to satisfy the curious mind and while it can certainly open up sense doors it is NOT self-inquiry into our true and only nature. Without sounding dismissive, the earnest seeker/inquirer will soon find the drug … a child’s play, of course not without its fun!

That said, since I am not exactly a “finder” (yet?!), I at times wonder what it (name the drug) might feel like when I would be experiencing it while abiding as the I AM, or even as an observer knowing fully that the creator of the altered states is part of the altered state itself. This alone is mind altering enough without being under any influence!

From Art Ticknor:

Richard Rose felt that there was a spiritual window that opened back in the 1960s with the widespread use of LSD and marijuana. The people who tried them may have experienced their “reality” melting into something that questioned their identity.

But many of the users got “hooked” on them to escape “reality” or to recreate intense experiences, often leading to anxiety, “bad trips,” psychosis, and flashbacks.

He said in his public talks in the early 1970s he would come across habitual users of perception-altering substances who would be crying when they listened to him talking about becoming the Truth, who would indicate that they felt it would be impossible for them to gain the mental clarity that ongoing use of psychoactive substances including alcohol would hinder.

From Lena S:

My opinion is that the human mind and body are “vehicles of my travel,” a phrase coined by Richard Rose, which to me implies that those are the tools given me with which “to travel” to where ever my longing may take me. It may be to relative destinations, or beyond the relative, or “becoming.” And within that vehicle I believe there is the ability to follow a “homing device” to return back from whence I came beyond the relative. The means to go beyond the relative are not obvious or evident to any seeker, but become revealed with honest seeking. And for that, my motto is to pursue a pure heart and a clear mind. Whatever I subscribe to, either inside or outside, may contaminate both, so to ingest a substance that takes me somewhere not at all obvious, nor for someone’s or something’s unknown intentions, would violate the purity I seek with which to see clearly. I do not subscribe to any short or long path methodology, but as much as possible hopefully, to internal guidance that may resonate with what is revealed to me, but not by what I chemically become a captive victim to.

=> The Reader Commentary question for next month, the September 2026 TAT Forum, comes from Brett S:

The 19th Century English writer Emily Brontë was described by a close family friend as “a law unto herself, and a heroine in keeping to her law.”

In your spiritual search, do you have any “laws” for yourself? How well do you follow them?

Please  your response by the 25th of August, and indicate your preferred identification (the default is your first name and the initial letter of your last name). “Anonymous” and pen names are fine, too.

PS: What question(s) would you like to ask other TAT Forum readers?

Q for all: What are your thoughts on this month’s reader commentary? Please your feedback.

Richard Rose described a spiritual path as living one’s life aimed at finding the meaning of that life. Did you find anything relevant to your life or search in this month’s TAT Forum?

*******

(Continued from part 1, part 2, and part 3)

Emotions, desires, implants

Q. Could you comment on emotions and their application if any towards the search?

R. Well, emotions are combinations of implants and appetites, basically. In other words, we react in a certain way, and the reaction sometimes is reinforced. For instance the emotion of love, the yearning if you’ve had love to be loved again and this sort of thing, is nothing more than an implant. It’s nothing divine. A lot of people like to think that their most mundane reproductive mechanisms are divine. If they are, then so are a goat’s, because I’ve watched them make love and I think they have a real mental experience. But that’s emotion.

Q. Inaudible.

R. No, they’re confusing. You have to be aware, you have to watch that too, you have to watch that happen. Because it’s a desire. For instance a kid wants a toy and the other kid takes the toy, and then you see anger. First of all it’s artificial. When the little child first shows anger it’s artificial, it’s just a means of puffing up like a toad or something to frighten the other child out of the toy. But eventually it develops into a lifetime practice of anger – which we would call emotion. But these are basically mechanisms that are rooted in our desires, in our programming.

Q. Are you making a distinction between desires and emotion?

R. No, no. I mean the desire is basic, the emotion is the external manipulation they go through.

Q. Then the desire is just an implant.

R. Right, right.

Q. And anything else is just a reaction off that.

R. Yes, the emotion comes off the desire. There are two basic implants that the human has – by implants I mean that they’re programmed inside of you. One is desire and the other is curiosity.29 And we can’t control this. We can’t control our curiosity, and the thing is to recognize it and then use that in the vector. Use the curiosity in the right direction: allow yourself to be curious about philosophy or self-definition or something of that sort. The desire is organic; there’s no other explanation for it except that when the hormones develop to a certain point we develop desires. And a child, even though it doesn’t seem to have a hormonic domination, still has a desire for possession, desire for what it wants, the desire for a certain status – it doesn’t
