Convictions & Concerns

TAT members share their personal convictions and/or concerns

Is there progress in the spiritual search? Does it have an end?

Is there progress in the spiritual search, or is it “all or nothing”?

I’ll offer a possible formula for finding Truth. Rather than put our sights on something vague that is beyond the mind, there’s an alternative called retreating from untruth. It’s a path that involves backing away from error, where we erode our ignorance. Richard Rose called it the reverse vector.

The path involves an intense application of energy towards our spiritual quest. Otherwise, life will consume our time and energy and bounce us down a channel that we may not desire in the end. If we are sincere, our spiritual efforts become a center of gravity around which life revolves instead of the other way around.

It doesn’t mean that we must dedicate every minute of every day to spiritual matters. As a practical step in doing this, every spiritual teacher I encountered in my search advocated setting aside time each day to solely focus attention on solving the fundamental problem of life, and the question of what happens at death. The exact ways and means of doing this are best left to each seeker.

TAT Foundation News

It’s all about “ladder work” – helping and being helped

Richard Rose, the founder of the TAT Foundation, spent his life searching for the Truth, finding it, and helping others to find their Way. Although not well known to the public, he touched the lives of thousands of spiritual seekers through his books and lectures and through personal contacts with local study groups that continue to work with his teachings today. He felt strongly that helping others generates help for ourselves as well in our climb up the ladder to the golden find beyond the mind.

Call To Action For TAT Forum Reader

With the intention of increasing awareness of TAT’s meetings, books, and the Forum among younger serious seekers, and to increase awareness of ways to approach the search for self-definition, the TAT Foundation is now on Instagram.

You can help! A volunteer is producing shareable text-quote and video content of Richard Rose and TAT-adjacent teachers. We need your suggestions for short, provocative 1-3 sentence quotes or 1 minute or less video clips of people like Richard Rose, Art Ticknor, Bob Fergeson, Tess Hughes, Bob Cergol, Shawn Nevins, Bob Harwood, Anima Pundeer, Norio Kushi, Paul Rezendes, Paul Constant, Mike Gegenheimer & other favorites.

Please send favorite inspiring/irritating quotes—from books you have by those authors, from the TAT Forum, or any other place—to TAT quotes. If you have favorite parts of longer videos (ex: from a talk at a past TAT meeting), please email a link to the video and a timestamp.

Thank you!

TAT Foundation Press’s latest publication

The monthly TAT Forum newsletter has been online since November 2000 and has published hundreds and hundreds of spiritual essays, poems, images and humor. In 2014 the TAT Foundation Press compiled seven years of reader selected Forum excerpts and released the book Beyond Mind, Beyond Death. Well, they have done it again: Beyond Mind, Beyond Death II is now available.  And once again Forum readers parsed over seven years of entries to select their favorites.

BMBD II is organized as a roadmap of the spiritual journey.  The book follows the stages many seekers encounter: the mysterious restlessness, the practice of self-inquiry, the obstacles, the subtle traps, the discoveries and the return to ordinary life.

We’ve selected this quote to frame the perspective of the new edition: “There is no greater adventure than looking into the nature of life and reality.”

Many thanks to the TAT Forum readers who were part of the selection process and TAT Foundation Press publisher Shawn Nevins for the book cover and layout design.

~ Michael Whitely, BMBD II Editor

Beyond Mind, Beyond Death II composed of selections from the second 10 years of TAT Forum monthly issues, is now available on Amazon in paperback, Kindle and audiobook format.

Your Contributions to TAT News

TAT founder Richard Rose believed that working with others accelerates our retreat from untruth. He also felt that such efforts were most effective when applied with discernment, meaning working with others on the rungs of the ladder closest to our own. The TAT News section is for TAT members to communicate about work they’ve been doing with or for other members and friends. Please your “ladder work” news.

Humor {(h)yo͞omər}

Inspiration & Irritation

Irritation moves us; inspiration provides a direction

In Remembrance of Bart Marshall

Bart passed away on July 28th this year.

God is waiting for us to ask for Truth at all costs—and mean it, with all our heart and all our mind and all our soul. ~ Bart Marshall, personal correspondence

I first met Bart on Richard Rose’s farm in 1990. From the first moment—and through the decades after—he was an excellent communicator, regardless of whether he was delivering a formal presentation, talking in small groups, writing, or just chatting it up one-on-one. When he got on a roll talking about the Divine, he electrified the room like no other. It was like the Spirit heard his words and graced us with a profound presence. He left an indelible mark on his listeners and readers.

~ Phil C.

I saw Bart on DVDs and read articles he wrote for the TAT Forum before I started going to TAT meetings myself. I remember Bart would say things like: “Live your whole life as if it is a prayer.” He embodied that. Bart was a writer and masterful storyteller too. The book After the Absolute has David Gold’s name as the author but if you knew Bart you could tell he was the ghostwriter making the storytelling more magical and captivating.

~ Ricky C.

I was sorry to hear of Bart’s passing. Bart contributed to After the Absolute, a book that I believe changed the trajectory of my life. I was in my early to mid-twenties when I read it, and it gripped me in a way that no book ever had. Reading it, it felt like reading a blueprint for my life. I was still deciding what I wanted to “be” in life, and I remember thinking, “I didn’t even know this was an option!” That book eventually brought me to TAT, and a few years later I got the chance to meet Bart and stay at his home for a few days. After being properly advised by Phil on what might make an appropriate gift for my host, and receiving what I hoped was a positive reference from people in TAT, I drove up and stayed with Bart for a couple days, even though we’d never met. He was ready to talk to me about anything I was up for, and some things I wasn’t. He was open, personal, and authentic. Nothing pretentious about him. My partner experienced the same thing when she went to a TAT meeting and ended up in a conversation with Bart; he was someone who came across as kind-hearted, even or maybe especially when the topics were things he was passionate about. From what I know of his life, he had his share of hardships. I’m thankful that he met Richard Rose, and chose to share what he learned so openly, so profoundly, with so many people.

~ Brett S.

A metaphor Bart used once: every time you turn attention inwards, it is like putting another demolition charge on a building. Put enough on, over time, and it can tear it down. Every serious effort, no matter how small, is putting another demolition charge on the structure blocking truth.

~ Dan G.

I made my first visit to TAT in September 2005. It was where I first heard Bart Marshall speaking. He gave his talk on Strategies for Awakening.

These strategies, he said, were a summary of the recommended practices of the essential spiritual teachings of the world. He put them into layman’s language, which was essential for me as I was not steeped in the lingo of spiritual traditions.

~ Tess Hughes

“From Vietnam to Zen: A Green Beret’s perspective” was one of 3 lectures I heard in my first Fall semester as a graduate student at NC State in 1990. Bart’s talk and 2 others offered by the Self Knowledge Symposium were inspiring lectures which awakened something within.  They were the starting gun for conscious seeking.

~ Eric C.

I had the great opportunity to correspond with Bart in his final year before he fell ill. I reached out after reading his book on Spiritual Warriorhood. I shared some things I was working on regarding self-inquiry and he encouraged me to keep on the path. It was great to know him, even if only via correspondence and for a brief season.

~ Beau M. Howe

I default to summing a life by its accomplishments.  Bart Marshall was a talented leader of self inquiry groups, a gifted writer and storyteller.  Thousands of people encountered Bart through his essays, books, lectures, and meetings, and many were changed for the better by his efforts to pass on his awakening.

~ Shawn Nevins

~ Thanks to Phil C. for his photo of Bart circa 2019.

Comfort vs. Honesty?

“I wanted it to be really provocative and visceral,” McCurdy said of the cover. “I didn’t want anything abstract.”…McCurdy is not afraid of alienating readers; in fact, she hopes readers feel unsettled and queasy at times, she said. When I told her that I often felt simultaneously disturbed and engrossed by the novel, she was thrilled. “My dream,” she said, beaming. “To me, if something makes you uncomfortable, it’s probably truthful,” she said. “If it doesn’t make you uncomfortable, it’s probably dishonest in some way.” ~ Quote from a New York Times review of the novel by Jennette McCurdy.

~ Thanks to Brett S., who wrote: “The book isn’t “overtly spiritual,” but the quote resonated with me.” The image is from the front cover of the Amazon I’m Glad My Mom Died listing.

Q: Have you seen a relationship between comfort and dishonesty?

My Left Brain Understands Those Feelings Perfectly Well….

I had a small revelation recently that I would like to share as it may be of help to other seekers.

Never having considered myself a “feeling person” until more recent years when I have become at least more hopeful, I have assumed that either the feeling part of my brain had been nonfunctional, or that a defensive barrier was placed around it so that all feelings including those potentially negative or hurtful were avoided and would never rise to the level of experience….

~ Thanks to a TAT member who wishes to remain anonymous. The photo is one of the author’s.

Q: What are your thoughts and feelings on the topic of thoughts and feelings?

PLANNING for the NOVEMBER 6th-8th TAT MEETING
Claymont Retreat Center, Charles Town, WV
Theme: The Uncertainty of Existence

Collegial mini-presentations, discussions and breakout sessions to discuss participants’ assumptions / beliefs / conclusions, etc., and doubts.

(“Collegial describes a professional, cooperative work environment characterized by shared authority, mutual respect, and friendly interaction among peers. It implies working together as colleagues, often with minimal supervision, to foster a supportive and productive atmosphere.” ~ Google AI Overview) Let’s keep it to amateur seekers and finders, though 🙂

  1. What topics would you like to hear presented? Discussed?
  2. What topics would you not like to hear presented? Discussed?
  3. Are you willing to participate in mini-presentations? Discussions?
  4. Do you consider yourself a seeker? Finder? Other?
  5. Other suggestions?

Reader Commentary

Encouraging interactive readership among TAT members and friends

A reader wrote that what would make the Forum more interesting would be:

Hearing from people who are searching—and have questions instead of those providing endless advice and “answers.” What challenges they are facing. What their doubts and questions are. How they perceive their path is going. What they are doing in their lives. Where they think they will end up, etc., etc.

Can you help make the Forum more interesting?

The Reader Commentary question for the September 2026 TAT Forum, comes from Brett S:

The 19th Century English writer Emily Brontë was described by a close family friend as “a law unto herself, and a heroine in keeping to her law.”

In your spiritual search, do you have any “laws” for yourself? How well do you follow them?

Responses follow:

From Scott N:

I am wishy-washy and find it nearly impossible to stick to any given practice or commitment. I constantly second guess myself, thinking that I am meditating wrong, or that a different approach would be more useful, or that I’d simply prefer to do something else. I tried to fight that tendency for years and force myself into whatever I imagined I was supposed to be doing (or supposed to want to be doing), to no avail. The only law I follow in my practice now is to stop making empty promises to myself and simply do whatever I’m drawn to — and then watch carefully what happens, without imagining an ideal. This has made my practice playful, effortless, and surprisingly productive. I sometimes fall back into old thinking patterns, but it has gotten easier to see those thoughts as just one more leaf floating down the river to watch.

From Jim P:

The Law That Isn’t….

From Brett S:

What impressed me when I read about Emily Brontë is that she seemed to have inner conviction, a sense of who she was, that she stood by regardless of whether it was easy or not.

From Lena S:

Do I abide by a law? Yes, though it seems like a vow, or maybe that I’m devoted to find a way home. Devotion is like a commitment with a heavy dose of feeling added to it. How could I not have strong feeling if it is something I really, really want? Actually, rather than forcing, pushing or using great effort, it feels more like being pulled, nurtured and even as if falling in love with what “I Want Most” even as it seems I have no say in the matter at all. But there is also choice, and when devoted, there will be indications from which I can choose, as if pointers as to which direction I might go. The term “law” for me does suggest there are laws to existence I will never understand, but one obvious is that I will reap what is sown, as commitment will necessarily have its results.

From Leonard Schwartz:

btw- i follow these “Laws” fairly consistently… some 80%, some near 100%, and a few true 100% which i do not think of as Laws… because I AM THAT.

From Art Ticknor:

The first law I remember following resulted from hearing Richard Rose say that a serious seeker would have a daily meditation practice of at least an hour. I was not a morning person, an accomplished procrastinator, and with an active family of wife and kids, there were some evenings I just didn’t get to the planned meditation. Before long I admitted that I needed to get up an hour early every morning in order to follow that practice “religiously.”

From Dan G:

A variation on the law of faith: that the truth is always better than continuing a lie in the long run. My following that law ebbs and flows (and ebbs). But it could go all the way to: How long is running from the Hound of Heaven too long? 100 lifetimes? 100 seconds? Facing the truth might be better than spending either of those times running.

=> The Reader Commentary question for next month, the October 2026 TAT Forum, comes from Brenda Agnew:

How significant is the asking of questions in readers’ practice?  Are there occasions when questions melt away rather than being answered?  Is that seen as part of the self-delusion process or a development on the path?  Do the questions change over time in content or intensity? Do readers seek questions if none naturally emerge? Can there be a path without questions?

Please  your response by the 25th of September, and indicate your preferred identification (the default is your first name and the initial letter of your last name). “Anonymous” and pen names are fine, too.

PS: What question(s) would you like to ask other TAT Forum readers?

Q for all: What are your thoughts on this month’s reader commentary? Please your feedback.

Richard Rose described a spiritual path as living one’s life aimed at finding the meaning of that life. Did you find anything relevant to your life or search in this month’s TAT Forum?

Founder’s Wisdom

Richard Rose (1917-2005) established the TAT Foundation
in 1973 to encourage people to work together on what
he considered to be the “grand project” of spiritual work.

A Method of Going Inside, conclusion
by Richard Rose

See Richard Rose: A Method of Going Inside for Steve Harnish’s complete transcript of the talk given in Pittsburgh in 1977.

*******

(Continued from part 1, part 2, part 3 and part 4)

The lecture ends with a few comments about people who have condescending attitudes toward other seekers, then an invitation to join him in the cafeteria, and applause.

The quality of the digital tape with these ending comments is very poor.

The final paragraph from the previous tape (series part 4) was:

R: There is a tremendous lot, yeah. Like Dan said, this group that they have here in Pittsburgh [the early local groups, usually meeting at colleges, run by young people and with mostly young people participating, were called Pyramid Zen groups -Ed.] basically doesn’t advocate addiction to any religion or group. And because of that they came under criticism for not being true Zen or something like that. “True Zen” means being true fanatics, to some sandal-cracking groups of people.

Rose continued:

[Their aim] is not necessarily to tell you the truth. Truth will come here [???]

I don’t know whether I told you the [??]

Truth is in the hearts of men. It’s in every man’s heart.

But wherever you find people that think they have found something, unfortunately, they immediately look down their nose at you.

And even though you’ve … gone through the same thing.

People used to come to me and say “You’ll repent your sins on your death bed, Mr. Rose.”
You know, “You’ll come back to the Catholic Church.”
And another one would say, [??] the boys meeting and they’d show up after the meeting and they’d say,
“One of these days you’ll know what we’re talking about.”

Everybody has the sublime truth. And they’re always looking at you like you should have been shoveled out the back door of the barn.

And so [??] enough? room? See. [laugh]

So, they’re not interested, that’s all.

It’s an immediate war with the package [?] But they’re also at war with anybody who works too hard, for that matter.

Well, I think it’s dried [?] up in here now; we might as well [??] and wet it down with an orange juice if there aren’t any more questions.

[applause]
