TAT Foundation News

It’s all about “ladder work” – helping and being helped

Richard Rose, the founder of the TAT Foundation, spent his life searching for the Truth, finding it, and helping others to find their Way. Although not well known to the public, he touched the lives of thousands of spiritual seekers through his books and lectures and through personal contacts with local study groups that continue to work with his teachings today. He felt strongly that helping others generates help for ourselves as well in our climb up the ladder to the golden find beyond the mind.

Call To Action For TAT Forum Reader

Part 1 of 4 in a quote from Shawn Pethel.
Log into Instagram to see the slideshow including all four parts.

With the intention of increasing awareness of TAT’s meetings, books, and the Forum among younger serious seekers, and to increase awareness of ways to approach the search for self-definition, the TAT Foundation is now on Instagram.

You can help! A volunteer is producing shareable text-quote and video content of Richard Rose and TAT-adjacent teachers. We need your suggestions for short, provocative 1-3 sentence quotes or 1 minute or less video clips of people like Rose, Art Ticknor, Bob Fergeson, Tess Hughes, Bob Cergol, Shawn Nevins, Anima Pundeer, Norio Kushi, Paul Rezendes, Paul Constant, & other favorites. (An example here is selected by the TAT member who volunteers to oversee the Instagram account.)

Please send favorite inspiring/irritating quotes—from books you have by those authors, from the TAT Forum, or any other place—to TAT quotes. If you have favorite parts of longer videos (ex: from a talk at a past TAT meeting), please email a link to the video and a timestamp.

Thank you!

Your Contributions to TAT News

TAT founder Richard Rose believed that working with others accelerates our retreat from untruth. He also felt that such efforts were most effective when applied with discernment, meaning working with others on the rungs of the ladder closest to our own. The TAT News section is for TAT members to communicate about work they’ve been doing with or for other members and friends. Please your “ladder work” news.

Humor {(h)yo͞omər}

“One thing you must be able to do in the midst
of any experience is laugh. And experience
should show you that it isn’t real, that it’s a
movie. Life doesn’t take you seriously, so why
take it seriously.” ~ Richard Rose, Carillon

Absent, Appetite, and Art

ABSENT PROF
The professor, who was famous for the wool-gathering of his wits, returned home, and had his ring at the door answered by a new maid. The girl looked at him inquiringly:

“Um—ah—is Professor Johnson at home?” he asked, naming himself.

“No, sir,” the maid replied, “but he is expected any moment now.”

The professor turned away, the girl closed the door. Then the poor man sat down on the steps to wait for himself.

*

APPETITE
It was shortly after Thanksgiving Day that someone asked the little boy to define the word appetite. His reply was prompt and enthusiastic:
“When you’re eating you’re ‘appy; and when you get through you’re tight—that’s appetite!”

*

ART
An American tourist and his wife, after their return from abroad, were telling of the wonders seen by them at the Louvre in Paris. The husband mentioned with enthusiasm a picture which represented Adam and Eve and the serpent in the Garden of Eden, in connection with the eating of the forbidden fruit. The wife also waxed enthusiastic, and interjected a remark:
“Yes, we found the picture most interesting, most interesting indeed, because, you see, we know the anecdote.”

Schopenhauer?

~ Thanks to @lindaalvarez on TikTok. Per Google AI Overview: Stephen Hicks.org notes that the philosopher did not actually say this, though it aligns with his pessimistic views…. A more accurate reflection of his thought is: “The majority of men… are not capable of thinking, but only of believing, and… are not accessible to reason, but only to authority”. Gotta love the pessimistic humor, though.

Inspiration & Irritation

Irritation moves us; inspiration provides a direction

“I’m Tired”

I’m tired
Of this game of seeking.
Commit
Surrender
For God’s sake, be celibate.
I’m tired
Of how far away it all seems.
And of the nagging sense that I’m not swimming
Hard enough, upstream
When I never once asked to be thrown overboard.
I’m tired
Not of the questions, or longing
Though their fulfillment is welcomed
And feared.
No, I’m tired of the feeling that I’m
Somehow
Not doing enough
While feeling helpless to do more
To do anything
At all

There’s some self-pity in this poem, no doubt about that. It’s more than that, though, I think….

~ Thanks to Michael R. The image is from freepik.com with prompt: “I’m Tired”

Fernando Pessoa

If I could sink my teeth into the whole earth
And actually taste it,
I’d be happier for a moment…
But I don’t always want to be happy.
To be unhappy now and then
Is part of being natural.
Not all days are sunny,
And when rain is scarce, we pray for it.
And so I take unhappiness with happiness
Naturally, just as I don’t marvel
That there are mountains and plains
And that there are rocks and grass…

What matters is to be natural and calm
In happiness and in unhappiness,
To feel as if feeling were seeing,
To think as if thinking were walking,
And to remember, when death comes, that each day dies,
And the sunset is beautiful, and so is the night that remains…
That’s how it is and how I want it to be…

~ Thanks to Shawn Nevins, who commented: “Perhaps of interest for the Forum, but it just came out in Tim Ferriss’ Friday newsletter [The May 5, 2023 5-Bullet Friday -Ed.].  I love the last three lines, reminiscent of the first two lines of Rose’s “The Dawn Breaks.”  Though Rose takes it from balance and acceptance, the initial stage of letting go, then drops us into eternity.  However, so much of the weight that people labor under would be relieved if the spirit of what Pessoa presents imbued their day-to-day life.” The image is from Wikimedia Commons.

Was Spinoza Self-Realized?

I had watched part of a YouTube video on 17th-century philosopher Baruch Spinoza, and I had the impression that he might have been self-realized. I thought it would be interesting to feature a brief investigation by interested seekers of how they would make an initial evaluation of whether someone might be a “finder.”

I sent an email late in August to maybe 20 folks with a subject line: Was Spinoza self-realized? The text was:

I received half a dozen responses, which I’ve included below. [-Ed.]

=> My opinion is that yes, he was realized, based on research that I did years ago where I encountered his teaching that all reality consists of one substance (God or Nature) which was abstract, impersonal, and that there is only one set of rules that governs the whole of reality, which surrounds us, and of which we are a part.

=> I’d never heard of Spinoza until I received the email from Art. I decided to do a little digging into him and the more I learnt about him, the more I came to be impressed by him. From what I learnt, he was a very deep thinker. From his writings he obviously had reached a great understanding of our conditioning. He viewed what is and God as one and was brave enough at only 23 to voice his insights where it ultimately led to his excommunication from the Jewish community.

=> Art sent me an email asking if Spinoza was self-realized, or “whether Spinoza had discovered the truth of what he was at the core of his being.” I’m not sure if that’s the only definition of Self-Realization. What was Spinoza looking for? Was he satisfied with what he found? What did he feel his life was calling him to do, and did he feel that he had fully, completely, and satisfactorily answered that call? I think anyone who, in their own heart, can honestly say they “completed their search” is Enlightened-enough for me, even if they don’t meet a technical definition.

=> I consider Spinoza as a scholastic philosopher and I will turn to a quote from Jim Burns, “Real philosophy is different from scholastic philosophy, which – after Plato – is ninety eight percent horse manure…. They put out pure garbage devoid of any capacity to experience meaning. You wind up feeling like you are chewing cotton”.

=> There are several aspects of his philosophy that may point to such; however, there is no autobiography or personal journal available to indicate if his philosophy is the result of either some ‘enlightenment’ experience or from reason, observation and theory.

=> I’m new to Spinoza and only came across him through this question. My very basic understanding of his philosophy comes from listening to a couple of podcasts with Dr. Steven Nadler, so what I share here is just a first impression. What struck me immediately was the practicality of Spinoza’s work—as though it was written to be lived, not just contemplated. I imagine that difficult life experiences, such as losing his parents and brother and being cast out of his community at an early age, may have given him a strong impetus to seek that which is real.

~ Thanks to the (re)searchers. The Spinoza portrait comes from Wikimedia Commons

You Need to Be Bored. Here’s Why.

~ Harvard professor Arthur C. Brooks explains why: “Why aren’t we looking? We’ve shut off boredom….”

Looking is arguably required for self-inquiry. What is self-inquiry? Google search responded to that question with this rather astounding AI Overview:

Self-inquiry is a spiritual practice of asking “Who am I?” to discover one’s true, unchanging nature by turning attention inward and investigating the source of the “I-thought”. By examining the contents of consciousness, such as thoughts, emotions, and sensations, the practitioner realizes that they are the awareness itself, not the fleeting experiences. This practice, championed by Ramana Maharshi, helps to deconstruct the ego and illusions of identity, leading to self-realization or enlightenment.

Please  your thoughts on the above items.

Reader Commentary

Encouraging interactive readership among TAT members and friends

A reader wrote that what would make the Forum more interesting would be:

Hearing from people who are searching—and have questions instead of those providing endless advice and “answers.” What challenges they are facing. What their doubts and questions are. How they perceive their path is going. What they are doing in their lives. Where they think they will end up, etc., etc.

Can you help make the Forum more interesting?

“A spiritual path’s objective is deeply personal but often includes achieving enlightenment, self-realization, or union with the divine, leading to lasting peace, joy, wisdom, and freedom from suffering” ~ Google search on “spiritual path objective”

“Spiritual celibacy is the practice of abstaining from sexual activity as a means to deepen one’s spiritual life and connection with the divine. It is often associated with religious or spiritual traditions, where it is seen as a way to prioritize spiritual goods and devotion over worldly desires…. For many, celibacy is a path to cultivate holiness, purity, and a closer relationship with the divine.” ~ Google search on “spiritual celibacy”

The Reader Commentary question for the October TAT Forum is:

What do you consider as the pros and cons of celibacy?

Responses follow:

From Patrick K:

I’m very much in the pro-celibacy camp. I actually can’t mention a con. If there are cons, that is just the mind-body yammering. Nature may seem against our efforts to be celibate but that provides the friction, and as they say, “you can’t have traction without friction”. They will say that you may have prostate trouble if you are celibate, but the fact is you may have prostate trouble either way. Who is actually to know, a celibate man with a very disciplined mind may seldom put pressure on his prostate versus a sexually active man with an undisciplined mind. They will say what about having a romantic relationship with your partner? Romance is cockamamie bullshit. Whoever needs a romantic partner over a loyal friend have got their priorities all skewed.

From Anima Pundeer:

Pros: Celibacy is a way to cultivate a disciplined lifestyle, where you learn how to conserve or manage your vital energy. With self-awareness, we come to realize the role our appetites play in shaping our state of mind. Celibacy helps create the mental space where you are not driven by your physical desires, keeping you focused on your spiritual goal.

The physical body has its own needs and wants. It is difficult to completely restrain your senses. Moderation is what helps in not getting obsessed with your appetites.

When you are able to keep your goal in mind, all other aspects of life get aligned with it. You know what to do and what not to do.

From lennys3cents:

pros:
increased momentum of my Vector.
reduction of “egoic-thought”, which opens “me” more to intuitive mind.
proportional increase in “spiritual energy”.
due to the overall change (increased level) of Being/Awakening, life quiets down… i lose “vampire” friends.
i lose identification with happiness.
greater clarity… which combined with increased intuition, reduces my “Penny”.
sex becomes a choice… intentional.
reduction of entity-influence.

From Bill Racine:

To paraphrase Richard Rose, the Albigen System is a system of maximum reversal: we examine, confront and challenge every thought, every concept, every desire, every aspiration, with the intention of seeing the truth of its origin and its value. We seek to discover and know how much of our individual life and awareness is a (massively complex) program written into a biological robot by an infinitely complex Nature, and how much we can legitimately claim as autonomy, how much are we self-initiated and self-directed.

From Lena S:

Celibacy is easy!
Celibacy is not about sex, it is about love.
Sex has nothing to do with love.
Love has to do with some Higher Ideal and it is the strength of that desire that circumvents sex.

From Bob Cergol:

I contributed a lot of material on this question to Shawn’s book The Celibate Seeker so would point the reader there to read more of what I had to say about the topic.

Decades later from when that book was published, here is what I have to say about the question.

From Shane R:

It really depends on what kind of inner work you have already done and what your intentions are.

If you are someone who is dominated by your physical functions and live largely as the body dictates (i.e. seeking pleasure and comfort), you may be hard-pressed to see any advantages of celibacy, much less actually try it.

From Art Ticknor:

One of the ways that Richard Rose used to talk about celibacy was with his recommendation of Think and Grow Rich by self-help author Napolean Hill, which included the 16 principles of what Hill termed the Law of Success. Rose felt that the principles of success are the same for transcendental goals as for mundane ones. A principle that Rose focused on was diverting the flow of energy expenditure from less important goals to your most important one.

In a talk given at Ohio State University in 1974, he referred to that process as “closing doors”:

From Dan G:

There are two main pros I’ve seen:

1. Retreating from untruth: as attention tries to look inward, I find desires and fears try harder to pull my attention out. The practice of celibacy gives me practice turning attention from a loud inner voice to something more important. From a false, imposter self, to the unknown.

Other Reader Feedback

From Don A:

I appreciated Dan G’s letter in September’s Other Reader Feedback.

I flinch every time I see another “seeker” resorting to an AI-composed summary, response or art-work (sorry TAT Forum) instead of reaching a little deeper inside to pull something genuine out of themselves. Dan said: “The AI is a simulated seeker. It doesn’t go home at night and desperately reflect on its purpose in life.”

Amen, Dan!

Why do readers likewise not cringe when an AI-authored article talks about love, inspiration, intention or grace?
May I add, AI can never know let alone seek in the direction from which my inspiration comes.
I’ve never seen an AI response be “Don’t Know.”

From Jerry S:

Richard Rose once said something like if you pray hard enough, then you will hear and respond. The Lord’s Prayer Revealed is an online video that promises to explain the hidden meaning behind the primary Christian prayer, and it’s premise is that God is within and specifically that the Lord’s Prayer has a secret message that the author elaborately translates and his translation triggers that Inner Presence and leads to a form of redemption.
The one thing that sends up red flags for me is when someone is trying to convince me of something.
The creator of the video took a basic belief that I subscribe to, and then built an elaborate even entertaining interpretation around it. It is just one more story line by an author who is certain that what he found is what I will find and that specific benefits will follow if I accept and then follow that story line, only one of a library of his story lines about Christ-secrets.

=> The Reader Commentary question for next month, the November TAT Forum, is from NNN:

What are the next steps when you have half an identity crisis – when you know what you are not, but have yet to know what you are?

Please  your response by the 25th of October, and indicate your preferred identification (the default is your first name and the initial letter of your last name). “Anonymous” and pen names are fine, too.

PS: What question(s) would you like to ask other TAT Forum readers?

Q: What are your thoughts on this month’s reader commentary? Please your feedback.

Richard Rose described a spiritual path as living one’s life aimed at finding the meaning of that life. Did you find anything relevant to your life or search in this month’s TAT Forum?

Transcript of the YouTube clip Richard Rose – Everything is Perfect

=> I. Richard Rose reading a middle section of his poem “The Mirror

do we not hear the voice of god

howling with funeral solemnness

through the forest in the winter roaring

and cascading rivers

piercing his own sensitivities

enlightening an ocean gale

feeling cosmic pain in the explosion of

planets

in the quaking of planets or in the

divine breath of a hurricane

should we rejoice the god through tiny

human nerves experiences

all forms of horror and pain despair and

fear

can we imagine the glories of a god so

self-watching

so identified with us who are

so identified with this pointless game

for god now breaks into many parts

observers watching observers

and observers of observers of observers

but which of these billions is really

here now

which of these particles among god’s

infinite number of particles

is watching god is he alive to all who

watch

death and life is he alive to god who

rejoices in seeing god particularized

or is he alive who is not among the

myriad observers

the myriad eyes that sleep or remain

less asleep

is he alive who hears through millions

of years of greater or lesser

dependability

or is he alive that turns his back on

madness

on rejoicing in despair on pleasure and

pain

on god’s [and] god particles

and who looks on nothingness with apathy

and indifference

who laughs at the thunderings of hell

and the shrill insanity of heaven

who feels with feelingness as only god

can feel

but who turns once more back to his

fellow man saying

i have become a mirror

look beyond my beauty look beyond my

ugliness

look beyond my wordlessness my

inarticulateness

my fractured mentality for i have been

back there freezing and exploding

burning and drowning

i have been the insanity of those

observing, i’ve lost

all my particles except that which is a

mirror

which is nothing of me but which gathers

other particles which are inarticulate

and which identify with other infinite

articulations of madness

i am that which gathers other particles

saying let us be mirrors

=> II. Richard Rose reading the beginning and end of his complete poem “The Dawn Breaks” (2:53)

the dawn breaks because another day and

night have died

but the sky was there through all

nothing is happening nothing is done

the holder lets go of his grasp and

everything becomes his domain

god is in his thought and his thought

that is only in his god

nothing is judged nothing is known

nothing is meaningful everything is

perfect

Homing Ground Update

… A spot on earth where people can do retreats and hold
meetings; where the emphasis is on friendship and the search.

Claymont Retreat Center

October 2025:

With the sale of the TAT Center in late September 2025, a committee is in the beginning stages of finding a future home for TAT.

A unique piece of land with a purposefully built retreat center building, acreage for solitary cabins, and a modest caretaker home is the view we have in mind. A place that feels more like a quiet retreat center than a large suburban home, and one that requires less ongoing live-in maintenance than our previous home are additional items that have been discussed. The net is cast widely, but we are focusing on the Appalachian Mountain range for property searches, seeking the right balance of solitude and accessibility.

The right property will come when it is meant to, and we look forward to that next chapter for TAT. In the meantime, many have expressed a fondness for the Claymont center, and we will hold retreats there until a new property for TAT is found.

A very special thank you to all who have been involved in creating and supporting the Hurdle Mills TAT Center during the last five years, and likewise to those planning TAT’s future home. We look forward to the coming TAT Meetings and Retreats and very much hope to see you there.
